The first shooting of the school year has happened

Well, we couldn’t even make it through August without a school shooting. Personally, I think it’s bullshit we send kids back to school during the hottest month of the year. Especially in the South, where the heat and humidity can only be described as oppressive. But, I digress.

On Wednesday, a shooting occurred at Josey High School in Augusta, Georgia. At 11:15 AM local time, an altercation between two male students escalated into a shooting. The victim was shot in the finger, and his injuries are not life-threatening.

The 16-year-old shooter fled the scene, but turned himself in the next day. He’s been charged with aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a handgun under 18 and carrying a weapon on school property.

The school does not have metal detectors, but again, metal detectors are not the be all and end all solution to keeping guns out of schools. At best, they’re a crap shoot. Unless you run the students through them one at a time, they’re not going to catch everything.

What I haven’t seen asked by the local media is where the 16-year-old managed to get the gun. This is not surprising since Georgia received an F grade from the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. I’d be surprised if that even becomes an issue in this case.

I’ll post more on this story as details become available and circumstances allow.
